Edwin "Russ" Connell III.

In Focus

Inside the membership of the Anniston Country stands a vast variety of people. There are members who have grown up in Calhoun County to members who have spent most of their adult lives in Anniston. Not all of the membership makeup is a list of previous golf or tennis championship players. A great majority of the membership are members who simply just enjoy hitting the little white ball who occasionally hit a shot that makes them feel like they can beat anybody in the world.

Russ Connell and his wife Karen

There are members who are average on the golf and tennis courts but their usage of the Club is far from average. Our member spotlight is a member who gets his money’s worth. His family loves the pool in the summertime. He loves the Junior Olympics in the summertime, so he can enroll the kids and find anybody to play a quick nine on the course. Both he and his wife use the fitness center the day after a night out in the dining room. As they spend a lot of time at the Club, we had time to catch up with the Auburn grad and his Alabama spouse....

Do you know who is an English teacher at The Donoho School by day; golf coach by night; is dubbed “Big Stick” by our Pro, Kevin Daugherty; been a member since 2003; and married to a dentist?
You guessed it, Russ Connell.

Interview
ACC: How did you meet your spouse Karen?  “It was actually a blind date after college. My cousin was Karen’s roommate in college, and she set it all up.”

ACC: Your fondest ACC memory?  “Since I am a schoolteacher, I am blessed to spend every summer with my kids. We make great memories each summer at the Club.”

ACC: What is your favorite quote?  “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. –anonymous”

ACC: Favorite ACC meal?  ``Chef has an appetizer that slays me! The tempura fried coldwater lobster tail with seaweed salad and spicy peanut dipping sauce.”

ACC: What is in your CD player right now?   “Well, I don’t have a CD player, but currently I have some classical music playing. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue/Cuban Overture.”

ACC: If you could work at the Club, what would you do?  “I love to cook, so I suppose I’d find my way to the kitchen. But don’t worry, Chef…your job is safe, I can assure you!”

ACC: Who is your favorite athlete?   “Payton Manning because I like the way he handles his business. He seems like a real gentleman as well.”

ACC: Something the ACC members might not know about you?  “I am a crossword junkie. I work the New York Times and the Anniston Star crosswords everyday. I am addicted. It’s embarrassing.”

ACC: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what two books would you want to go along with the Bible?  “The collective works of Shakespeare and Paradise Lost.”

The Club is very fortunate to have families like the Connell’s who enjoy their very own families at the Club. Say hello to the Connell family next time you see them at the Club while they are keeping the main thing the main thing.

Until next time…
