History of ACC
Historical recordings state that in and around the year of 1902, there was a small house built on Sixth Street that was called "The Golf Club". The Club was moved from the original location to its' present area and has gone through many changes during the years. Anniston Country Club celebrated its' one hundred year anniversary in 2009 and is presently in its' 106th year.
In 1909 era of time, "golf course" was not a familiar word in Anniston, so the first "links" was a nine-hole layout with sand greens. The present layout was started as a nine-hole course about 1909-1910, when the Anniston Country Club was founded as successor to the original golf club. Some years before the depression time, it developed into the present 18- hole course. Research has evidence that ACC struggled, as all clubs did in their beginning, but surviving many changes and rebuilding of the course over the years to bring into play the decisions made by recommendations and member vote to move the club forward with major choices and changes. From the years 2005- 2007, the golf course had a total renovation to the practice range and adding a teaching facility. Membership also approved a No-Till Renovation process to the greens, choosing Champion Grass.
History records state in January, just before the First World War, the first two tennis courts were constructed with clay and lime markings. As time and monies presented itself, the two clay courts became the parking are for the club, and new courts were constructed during a period of years at the present day site, including a tennis shop and lights. In the year 2005, the reconstruction began on the tennis facility. To date the nine courts, one hard court, eight clay courts, four of which are hydrogrid, and the tennis shop are second to none in this area. The tennis facility is supported by a strong tennis program.
ACC has risen from days of $.27 gas per gal, senior dues of $7.50 per month, caddy fee of $1.50 per eighteen holes of golf to the present with gas and dues being somewhat higher in price, and golf carts to accommodate any player if they choose. Through the years, renovations, and additions were a factor to keep all facilities refreshed, but the major choices made in the most recent of times has brought ACC to date with the future. The 2006 major construction of a very modern fitness facility with state of the art equipment brought new men and women locker rooms, restrooms, showers and steam rooms. The view from the sweeping terrace is the most beautiful in Calhoun County.
To quote one of the former members in the year of 1982, "Many boards, committees, and members have worked long and hard from the beginning of the existence of this Club to the present". A hundred years of growth, with planning, trials and tribulations, renovations, and changes over many years have brought ACC to the present. The beginning started with the first members giving creation, and the members from that point to today's members carrying on the tradition and creating more history and long range planning.
Credit is given to former members Mr. Oscar M. Kilby and Mr. Clifton Colyer for much of the history printed from the early years of the Anniston Country Club.
